Chadwick Lakes (Malta)
Chadwick Lakes

The Chadwick Lakes are a series of man-made reservoirs near Rabat on Malta , also known as "Wied il-Qlejgha". They fill up after rains in winter and form important reservoirs of drinking water. They are the only lake-like structures in the country. In summer they dry out completely.

Background and geography

After a cholera epidemic in 1887, the supply of clean water became an important issue, so the Chadwick Lakes and their system of dams were created to collect rainwater and use it for drinking water. They were named after the British civil engineer Osbert Chadwick, who took over the construction work here in the 1890s. The area lies between Rabat and Mtarfa and offers opportunities for hiking. The lakes form a habitat for many plant and animal species. The water flows through several basins in an easterly direction towards Mosta . Over time, however, the reservoirs filled with sediment, debris and other debris, which clouded the water and created problems for farmers during heavy rain in 2009 because the fields in the area were flooded.

These ponds are not to be confused with Chadwick Lake near Newburgh .
