The 1978 Daily Mail Champion of Champions was an invitation-only snooker tournament for the 1978/79 season . The tournament was held from November 2nd to 3rd, 1978 at the Wembley Conference Center in London , England . The winner was Ray Reardon from Welsh , who defeated Alex Higgins from Northern Ireland 11: 9 in the final. By contrast, Higgins played the tournament's highest break with a 94 break.
Prize money
The tournament was sponsored by the British tabloid Daily Mail . The prize pool was £ 4,000 , half of which went to the winner.

Tournament course
The first edition of the Champion of Champions was hosted by boxing promoter Mike Barrett , who adopted the format of the Dry Blackthorn Cup that he also hosted from the previous year and also held it at the Wembley Conference Center . In contrast to the Dry Blackthorn Cup, however, the games were not played in the Best of 7 Frames mode, but in the Best of 11 Frames mode, the two semi-finals and the final in the Best of 21 Frames mode . Three of the four participants in the cup also took part in this tournament, only John Spencer was replaced by Doug Mountjoy .

In the final, Ray Reardon and Alex Higgins, two world champions and leading players of the 1970s, met. While Reardon had defeated the winner of the Dry Blackthorn Cup - Patsy Fagan - 6: 1 , Higgins had it a little more difficult with a 6: 3 over Doug Mountjoy . Reardon dominated the beginning of the match and took the lead 3-0 and 4-1 before Higgins came up to 4-3. In the following, Reardon extended his lead to 5: 3, 8: 4 and 9: 5 before Higgins was able to equalize to 9: 9. With a break of 77, Reardon was able to take the lead again to win the decisive 20th frame with 95:12 and thus win the tournament.
