The nucleus of the city was a caravanserai from the 14th century, which was donated by the Mamluk emir Sayf al-Din Shaichu al-'Umari. The name is derived from this fact, as the word Chan stands for a smaller caravanserai. In today's urban area there is a settlement hill , which was inhabited until the 20th century BC. And contains, among other things, the remains of the Neo-Assyrian city of Ashkhani.

Syrian civil war

At least 86 people died and others were injured in the poison gas attack on April 4, 2017 during the civil war in Syria . The province of Idlib was then controlled by a Syrian rebel alliance and was considered the most important stronghold of the rebels. The Syrian government has been blamed for the attack by teams of experts from the United Nations and governments of various states.

After weeks of fighting with advancing government troops and numerous air strikes, the remaining fighters of the HTS and allied militias gave up the place on August 20, 2019 according to their own statements.
