The Charbonnerie ( French for charcoal burning) was a French secret society of the 19th century , which had developed from secret organizations at the time of the Restoration and according to the Italian carbonari .

The Charbonnerie had its center in the Paris area . It developed far-reaching activity during the Franco-Spanish War and tried to influence the population in a revolutionary sense even after the victory of the reaction in Spain.

After the July Revolution of 1830, the leading members of Louis Philippe's government joined them. The last remnants became active in southern France in 1841, then the secret society disappeared.
