Charles Osgood (born February 25, 1809 in Salem , Massachusetts , † June 2, 1890 there ) was an American painter .

Life

Charles Osgood was born in 1809 to Captain Nathaniel Osgood and his wife Elizabeth, née Cowan. He was the second of eight children. In Salem he attended Mr. Archer's School. He received his artistic training in Boston from the portrait painter Chester Harding (1792–1866) and copied some of his works, such as the portrait of President John Quincy Adams . He opened his first studio at the age of 18 . The following year he went back to Salem, where he was only interrupted by a year-long stay in New York Cityaround 1840, until the end of his life. In 1838 he married Susan (Susannah) Ward, who died in 1844 after giving birth to their fourth child. Osgood was related to the painter Abel Nichols (1815-1860) through his wife and gave him painting lessons.

In the work of Charles Osgood there are also some landscapes, but his main oeuvre was portraits - partly executed as miniature paintings - of citizens of Salem and the surrounding area. From 1827 to 1863 alone, he created almost 1,000 works. One of his best-known works is the portrait of the writer Nathaniel Hawthorne , who also comes from Salem . As Salem's leading portrait painter in the mid-19th century, he was accepted into the Essex Institute , a scientific and cultural society , in 1863 . Because of his importance as a chronicler of his time and regional history in the Salem and Boston area, his works can mostly be found in historic homes and local history museums such as the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem and the Worcester Historical Museum . The few art museums that display his work include the Indiana University Art Museum in Bloomington, Indiana and the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick, Maine .
