Charles Verlinden

Charles Verlinden (born February 3, 1907 in Saint-Gilles / Sint-Gillis , † May 19, 1996 in Brussels ) was a Belgian historian and Medievalist .

Life

Charles Verlinden studied at the University of Ghent , the Sorbonne , the École pratique des hautes études , the École nationale des chartes and the Centro de estudios históricos in Madrid. Research stays in Paris (1933), Madrid (1934) and Italy (1938) followed. After receiving his doctorate in 1930, he initially taught in Ghent and Brussels until he became assistant for economic history at the Rijkshandelshogeschool Antwerp in 1940 . In 1944, Verlinden again moved to the University of Ghent as an assistant for history, where he became a full professor in the same year and remained until 1974. That year he retired. During his active time in Ghent, he held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Philology (1954–1956) and was a member of the University's Administrative Board.

As a specialist in economic history and the history of slavery , Verlinden was director of the Academia Belgica (1959–1977), director of the Belgian Historical Institute in Rome (1955–1986) and vice-president of the Commission internationale d'histoire maritime in Paris . He was visiting professor at a total of 46 universities in Europe and America.

honors and awards

Charles Verlinden was a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences, Poetry and Fine Arts (Flemish Section), the Real Academia de la Historia (Madrid), the Medieval Academy of America and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (since 1977). Two universities awarded him honorary doctorates: Sevilla 1968 and Coimbra 1988. For his important contributions to Italian history, he was also awarded the Premio Internazionale Galileo Galilei dei Rotary Italiani in 1970.

Charles Verlinden married Nelly Noulard in 1931; the marriage remained childless.
