Chascomús is a city in eastern Argentina . It is located on the Laguna de Chascomús lake in the interior of the province of Buenos Aires , has 33,607 inhabitants ( INDEC 2010 census ) and is a center of tourism, agriculture and, to a lesser extent, industry.
history
The city goes back to the fortification of Fortín de San Juan Bautista . This was founded by the Spanish in 1779 to defend the southern border of the effectively controlled regions of the viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata , which runs in this area . The areas south of it were in fact ruled by the Het (also called Pampas or Querandíes ), Mapuche and other indigenous peoples.
In 1839 the government under Juan Manuel de Rosas put down the short-lived popular uprising of the opposition revolutionary army Libres del Sur at the Battle of Chascomús . After the completion of a railway line to Buenos Aires in 1865, there was a rapid economic boom. In 1873 Chascomús obtained city rights.
Culture and sights
Among the sacred buildings of Chascomús, the cathedral (1839) in post-colonial style, seat of the diocese of Chascomús and the black chapel , which was built in 1861 and used by a community of Afro-Argentine Catholics, are worth mentioning .
Notable secular buildings are the town hall , which stands on the foundation of the old fortress, and the Casco-Haus , a stately residential building from the 19th century that was used as a barracks at times.
Economy and Infrastructure
The economy of Chascomús is largely determined by tourism and agriculture. The Laguna de Chascomús is used especially by the residents of Buenos Aires, 126 kilometers to the north, for water sports.
