Chatus is a red wine that is cultivated in the French department of Ardèche . It is usually expanded in a blend with other varieties such as the Syrah variety .

Origin, descent

The grape variety comes from France and was first described by the ampelograph Victor Pulliat. Most likely, the variety is a natural descendant of the Heunisch variety . The name of the variety may come from the hamlet "Chatus", part of the municipality of Verclause in the canton of Rémuzat in the Drôme department .

distribution

At the beginning of the 1990s, the area under vines was only 18 hectares. Before the phylloxera disaster , the variety was very widespread in the high altitudes around the Central Massif and in the Drôme region. Smaller stocks are also known in Italy.

World cultivation area of the variety in 2016: 62 ha in France, 9 ha in Italy
