Checkers
Checkers (also Checkers Court ) near Ellesborough in the English county of Buckinghamshire has been the official country residence of the British Prime Ministers since 1921 . The building complex, which stands in a spacious landscaped park, is located around 64 kilometers northwest of central London .
Dating from the 16th century manor house (English manor house ) was for centuries various privately owned family of the English landed gentry. In 1912, Arthur and Ruth Lee bought it. During the First World War it was used as a hospital. Towards the end of the war, the childless Lee couple decided to leave the house to the state as a country residence for the respective heads of government. After lengthy discussions with then Prime Minister David Lloyd George , the House of Commons accepted the gift through the Checkers Estate Act in 1917 . The house has served its current purpose since the Lee couple moved out in 1921.
The property is eponymous
