Cherry Rachel Wainer (born March 2, 1935 in East London , † November 14, 2014 in Las Vegas ) was a South African musician who became known for her evergreens played on the Hammond organ . In Germany she appeared regularly in the television program Beat, Beat, Beat in the late 1960s .

Life

Cherry Wainer was born in East London, South Africa in 1935. Her father was a concert organizer, her mother Zelda provided musical training on the piano. Jimmy Smith records introduced Wainer to the Hammond organ. She wrote numerous piano pieces on the organ manuals and appeared with them in South African clubs, initially with only six titles, which she repeated over and over, and because of her young age always accompanied by her mother.

At the age of 23 she had her breakthrough: In 1958 she performed with the drummer Don Storer, her future husband, at a private party of the billionaire John Schlesinger . The title Hoots Mon by the television big band Lord Rockingham's XI with Cherry Wainer on the organ came to number 1 in the British singles charts in 1958. This was followed by tours in England and regular appearances by the band on entertainment programs on British television: Lunch Box , Oh Boy! and Boy Meets Girls (all ITV ). Cherry Wainer was among the first to play Motown music in front of a teenage audience . She had her Hammond organ encased in white, quilted leather and precious stones, and her poodle often sat with her on the organ bench.

A few vocal numbers have been recorded by her, including the German-language Der Boy von Ipanema . In 1966, the Hessischer Rundfunk discovered Cherry Wainer and, together with Storer, engaged her on drums for the new youth television series Beat, Beat, Beat . The couple then moved to Las Vegas, USA, and married in 1992. After Storer's death in 2006, she gave up her artistic career and worked as a clerk in a small gift shop in Las Vegas, where she often gave autographs. She died in 2014.
