China Yunnan Airlines ( Chines. : 雲南航空公司 ; Pinyin : Yunnan Hángkōng Gongsi) was a Chinese airline company , which together with the China Northwest Airlines to China Eastern Airlines merged was.
It served regional destinations to and from Hong Kong , Singapore , Thailand and Laos from Kunming ( Yunnan Province , southwest China).
The company was based in Kunming and most recently had a modern fleet of Bombardier aircraft such as the Bombardier CRJ200 , Boeing 737-300 and Boeing 767-300 . This was completely taken over during the merger to form China Eastern Airlines.
Incidents
- On November 21, 2004, crashed Bombardier CRJ200 of China Yunnan Airlines with the air vehicle registration B-3072 and the serial number 7697 on the China Eastern Airlines Flight 5210 shortly after takeoff in Baotou in Inner Mongolia to a frozen lake. The machine was on its way to Shanghai . Just before impact, the jet rammed a small building. All 53 inmates and two people on the ground were killed. According to eyewitnesses, the machine spun strongly and crashed. The cause of the accident was determined to be hoarfrost on the wings, which had impaired the aerodynamics of the aircraft. The aircraft had not been de-iced before take-off.
