description

leaves

The Chinese hazel is a tree up to 40 meters high with a gray-brown, cracked bark and glandular, hairy, reddish young shoots that later become bald. The leaves have a 1 to 2.5 cm long, shaggy and hairy stalk. The leaf blade is 8 to 18 centimeters long and 6 to 12 centimeters wide, ovate to oblong ovoid, pointed with a slate, heart-shaped base and double-serrate, non-lobed leaf margin . Seven to eleven pairs of nerves are formed, the nerves on the underside of the leaf are hairy. The male kittens stand in groups of four to six. They are cylindrical, 1.5 to 2 inches long and hairy. The female inflorescences are in groups of two to six. They become 2 to 6 inches long. The nuts are spherical, 1 to 1.5 centimeters thick and surrounded by a striped, fine-haired shell that is narrowed over the nut and has a toothed top.

Distribution and location

The distribution area is in the temperate zone of China in the provinces of Gansu , Guizhou , Hubei , Shaanxi , Sichuan and Yunnan . There it grows in floodplains, on river banks or in species-rich forests at altitudes of 1200 to 3500 meters on fresh to moist, slightly acidic to alkaline, good mostly loamy soils in sunny to partially shaded locations. The species loves warmth and is usually frost hardy.

In the Red List of the IUCN , the Chinese hazel is as endangered ( "endangered") out. The population of mature trees is declining. The main reasons for this are overexploitation , loss of habitat and poor regeneration of the population.

Systematics

The Chinese hazel ( Corylus chinensis ) is a kind from the kind of hazel ( Corylus ) in the family of the birch family (Betulaceae). It is assigned to the Corylus section , Colurnae subsection . It was first described in 1899 by Adrien René Franchet . It resembles the tree hazel ( Corylus colurna ) and was temporarily regarded as a variety of this species under the name Corylus colurna var. Chinensis .

use

The Chinese hazel is only rarely used in forestry. It is used as an ornamental plant because of its fruits and also serves as a bee pasture.
