Chlorofluoride is an interhalogen compound that consists of the elements chlorine and fluorine . Like most interhalogens and all chlorofluorides, it is extremely reactive. It was discovered by Otto Ruff in 1928 .

Extraction and presentation

Chlorofluoride can be produced by heating a mixture of elemental chlorine and fluorine to 250 ° C in the presence of copper shavings.

It is also possible to display it by reacting chlorine trifluoride with chlorine.

Properties and use

Chlorofluoride is colorless as a solid and as a gas; as a liquid, it is pale yellow in color. It reacts violently with water , metals and many organic compounds under the appearance of fire; Glass attacks it with the formation of explosive chlorine oxides . Chlorofluoride can be used as a medium strength fluorinating reagent .
