Chontal
Chontal ( Nahuatl chontalli , "foreign") is a Nahua name for various indigenous peoples of Mexico who do not speak Nahuatl, as well as for their languages:
-
Chontal-Maya (Tabasco), own name Yokot'anob [Pl.] Or Yokot'an [Sg.] ("Speaker of the true language")
- Chontal Maya language , self-name Yokot t'an ("true language")
- Chontal (Oaxaca): Tequistlatec languages
- Chontal (Guerrero) (extinct, unclassified language)
In a similar way, the name "Chontal" was also used by the Nahua-speaking Nicarao for hostile neighboring ethnic groups in Nicaragua , from which the name of the Chontales department there goes back.
