Chris Cooper (born July 9, 1951 in Kansas City , Missouri ) is an American actor and Oscar winner.

Life

Chris Cooper spent most of his youth on his father's ranch. After finishing school, he began studying at the University of Missouri. He made his first film appearance in 1980 in the film Black Out - Anatomy of a Passion . After rather insignificant roles in television series and films, he was able to establish himself as an independent actor with films by John Sayles ( City of Hope and Lone Star ) . For his role in Lone Star , he received the established indie award Chlotrudis Award and was named "Best Actor" for the Independent Spirit Award nomination. His breakthrough came with Sam Mendes ' Oscar-winning film American Beauty , in which he played Colonel Frank Fitt . In 2002 he received the Oscar for best supporting actor and the Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of the orchid thief in adaptation - The Orchid Thief . The film Seabiscuit - With the Will to Success was also honored with seven nominations. In 2005 he was seen in Capote as FBI agent Alvin Dewey . In 2007 he played the lead role of spy Robert Hanssen in the film Unmasked - Treason at the highest level . In 2014, he took on the role of Norman Osborn in the comic book adaptation The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro .

He has been married to the actress Marianne Leone since 1983. The couple had a son, Jesse Cooper, who was born in 1987 and died of cerebral palsy in January 2005 .
