snooker

For the 2001/02 season, Chris Melling qualified for the first time for the professional snooker tournament series Main Tour via the Challenge Tour . At his first tournament as a professional, the British Open 2001 , he moved into the round of the last 80 after victories against Mark Gray and Atthasit Mahitthi , in which he was eliminated by Gerard Greene . In addition, he reached the round of 96 in three tournaments in the season. At the 2002 World Cup , however, he lost his opening game 7:10 against Jason Prince . At the end of the season he finished in 108th place in the world rankings and thus lost his Main Tour place.

After a year he managed to return to the Main Tour via the Challenge Tour, where he had won a tournament in the 2002/03 season. At the 2003 World Cup , as in the previous year, he was eliminated in the last 128. Since he started as an amateur, he had to survive five more qualifying rounds.

In the 2003/04 season , Melling was eliminated from the first seven of the nine tournaments with an opening defeat, where he reached the round of 96 at the Irish Masters because his opponent Joe Johnson did not play. He scored his first win of the season at the Players Championship against Matthew Couch . He then reached the round of 64 by winning against Ian Preece and Andy Hicks , in which he lost 4-5 to Stuart Bingham . It was his best result in a Main Tour tournament until 2014 and is still his best result in a full world ranking tournament to this day (as of 2016) . At the 2004 World Cup , however, an opening defeat followed; with 9:10 he was eliminated against Brian Salmon . In the world rankings, he finished 114th and fell again from the Main Tour.

After trying unsuccessfully the following season to qualify again for the Main Tour via the Challenge Tour, he made it through the Pontin's International Open Series (PIOS) in 2006 , where he won one tournament and two in the 2005/06 season reached the semi-finals more times, returning to the main tour. In his third season as a professional he only got past the first round at the Malta Cup . He reached the round of the last 64 of a world ranking tournament there for the second time and then had to admit defeat to Adrian Gunnell 5-0. At the 2007 World Cup , he lost his opening match against David Morris from Ireland . With the 85th place at the end of the season, he achieved his best world ranking to date. But this was not enough to stay on the main tour for another year.

Starting in 2008, Chris Melling tried two seasons to qualify for the Main Tour via PIOS, but never got past the round of 16. He then did not take part in international snooker tournaments for four years before making another attempt at Q School in May 2014 to return to the main tour. At the very first tournament he won the final of his group 4: 3 against Welsh Duane Jones and qualified for the following two Main Tour seasons.

At the Wuxi Classic 2014 , the first world ranking tournament of the 2014/15 season , he reached the round of 64 with a 5-4 qualifying round win over Matthew Stevens and lost to wildcard player Zhao Xintong . In the further course of the season he only got past the first round in two other fully-fledged world ranking tournaments: At the International Championship 2014 and at the Welsh Open 2015 he reached the round of 64. In November 2014, he achieved his best result so far in one Main Tour Tournament: At the Ruhr Open , the sixth tournament of the Players Tour Championship 2014/15 , he moved into the round of 32 after victories against Ahmed Saif and former world champion Peter Ebdon , in which he won 2: 4 to the Scots Stephen Maguire lost. At the 2015 World Cup , he was eliminated in the first qualifying round 1:10 against Li Hang .

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season , Chris Melling achieved his best world ranking to date with 79th place . During this season he managed to win only one full world ranking tournament. In the first qualifying round of the Shanghai Masters he defeated the Welshman Daniel Wells 5: 4 before he was eliminated in the second qualifying round 5: 0 against Ken Doherty . On the Players Tour Championship 2015/16 he reached the round of 32 at the Bulgarian Open 2015 and the round of 64 at the Gibraltar Open 2015 . In qualifying for the 2016 World Cup , he was eliminated in the first round with 5:10 against David Morris. At the end of the season he came in 91st place in the world rankings and thus lost his professional status.

In May 2016 Melling tried to get back directly to the Main Tour via the Q School, but did not get past the third round.
