Chris Neil (* 18th June 1979 in Flesherton , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career 1996-2017 among others in 1121 games for the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger has denied . Neil was considered a classic enforcer during his time as an active player and held the Ottawa Senators' franchise record with over 2500 penalty minutes when he resigned . He is also among the 20 NHL players with the most penalty minutes in league history.
Career
Neil began his career as a hockey player with the North Bay Centennials , for which he was active from 1996 to 1999 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . During this time he was selected in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round as a total of 161 players by the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League .
Initially, however, the attacker played after his last season in the junior division for the Muskegon Fury in the United Hockey League . With the team he won the Colonial Cup at the end of the playoffs . Then the striker was active for two years for Ottawa's farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , from the International Hockey League . In the 2001/02 season , the right-shooter made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Ottawa Senators, for whom he played until the end of his career. Only during the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season was Neil for Ottawa's new farm team from the American Hockey League , the Binghamton Senators , out of the ice.
During the 2016/17 season , the attacker completed his 1,000th game in the NHL. He then received no further contract in Ottawa, so he declared his active career ended in December 2017 at the age of 38. His biggest success with Ottawa was reaching the final series of the Stanley Cup playoffs 2007 , in which the Sens were subject to the Detroit Red Wings .
