Christopher J. "Chris" Taylor (born June 13, 1950 in Dowagiac , Cass County , Michigan , † June 30, 1979 in Story City , Story County , Iowa ) was an American wrestler .

Life

The 1.96 m tall Taylor started for Iowa State University, for which he won the NCAA heavyweight championship in 1972 against Greg Wojciechowski. He won the bronze medal in super heavyweight (freestyle) at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. With a weight of approx. 200 kg, Chris Taylor is considered one of the heaviest Olympic athletes ever.

Of the 1972 games, his fight in the Greco-Roman style against Wilfried Dietrich is remembered, against whom he lost with a spectacular throw; in freestyle he had previously defeated Dietrich. Taylor, who ended up weighing around 230 kg, died of a heart attack at the age of 29.
