Christopher "Chris" Elliott Wondolowski (born July 28, 1983 in Danville , California ) is an American football player of Polish and Indian descent who plays on the position of a striker . Since 2009 he has been under contract with the San José Earthquakes in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top division in North American football.

Young and adult careers

Career start on the West Coast

Born and raised in the city of Danville in 1983 as the son of John and Janis Wondolowski (later Hoyt), Wondolowski began his active career as a football player in various youth training clubs and later also played at De La Salle High School in Concord , where he attended his was elected to the All-Bay Valley Athletic League First Team or the All-East Bay First Team and won the title in the North Coast Section with the team in 2001 . Wondolowski, who was already a talented striker in his early youth, played parallel to his time at De La Salle High School in the local youth football clubs Diablo Valley Soccer Club and Danville Mustang Soccer Association . In addition to his success at high school, Wondolowski was also named “Concord and Surroundings Player of the Year” twice.

In addition, the young talent of Polish and Indian descent ( Kiowa ) was active in the athletics department of his school during his high school years and was considered an equally talented middle-distance runner , who, among other things, in his two junior and senior years at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) organized state meetings. Because of his local but also general achievements, some athletics schools or schools with good athletics teams became aware of Wondolowski, including the sports department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Furthermore, he was also considered a talented young baseball player, where he usually shone in his youth at the position of middle infielder . Among other things, he won the PONY League World Series Championship at the age of 14 and was an All-Star in the San Ramon Valley Little League during that time . He also appeared in high school as a baseball player for two years, playing alongside the future professional Chris Carter . However, he soon gave up his baseball career in order to devote himself mainly to his favorite pastime at the time, athletics.

The time at Chico State

After graduating from De La Salle High School , Wondolowski moved to Chico, just under 250 kilometers away, to California State University , where he was also active in football. Already in his freshman year he led his team with ten goals and six assists from 19 completed games and increased his performance in the following years. In his sophomore year he scored twelve goals and seven assists in 19 league games, followed by eleven goals and eight assists from 23 games in his third year at Chico State, the junior year. Furthermore, Wondolowski was elected to the NCAA Division II All-America Second Team in 2003 and helped his team into the final of the NCAA Division II that year . In his senior year at Chico State, in which his goal rate decreased slightly and he scored five goals and prepared another two for his teammates, Wondolowski was also used by the amateur team Chico Rooks , where the trained striker was able to gain his first experience in men's football. During his college career, in which he had a total of 39 goals, 23 assists and 101 points scorer in 84 games, he was also in the All- CCAA First Team for all four years .

First experiences in men's football

Chris Wondolowski (2010)

For the team that played in the fourth-rate Men's Premier Soccer League , Wondolowski scored 17 goals (+ ten assists) in as many championship games in his only season as a team and was thus one of the main people responsible for first place in the regular season of the 2004 game year In the subsequent play-off, however, the then 21-year-old was eliminated with the team in the semi-finals and was unable to maintain any major success. At the end of the game year, Wondolowski was on the MPSL All-Star Team with his Chico Rooks teammates Dominic Jakubek , Todd Simmons and João Macedo . After a successful season in one of the three fourth-highest football leagues in the United States, the striker talent came via the MLS Supplemental Draft 2005 to the San José Earthquakes , to which he was drafted as the 41st pick. Wondolowski was intended for the 2005 game year primarily for the reserve team with play operations in the MLS Reserve Division . There he was used in all twelve championship games and was with his eight goals scored the most successful goalscorer in the reserve team of the San José Earthquakes.

He also managed two championship appearances for the professionals this season, after he was used as a substitute on August 3, 2005 in the four-round game of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2005 against the Portland Timbers . He finally made his MLS debut on September 10, 2005 in a game against CD Chivas USA , followed by another use in the highest North American football league. After a total of only two appearances in Major League Soccer, Wondolowski ended the season with the team in first place in the regular season of the "Western Conference", but was eliminated early in the subsequent play-offs.

Houston Dynamo replacement only

After moving to Houston Dynamo before the 2006 season , Wondolowski received little attention here in the professional team and spent most of the time in the reserve team of the Texans . There he was once again the most successful goalscorer of his team and even scored 13 goals in eleven championship appearances, making him the top scorer in the MLS Reserve Division in 2006. For the professional team, he started in four league games and was in a total of six games, whereby he also scored his first goal in Major League Soccer on August 30, 2006 in the 2-2 away draw against Chicago Fire and in the 42. Minute of play to equalize his team 1: 1 met. Also in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2006 , in which he was used in all three Houston Dynamo games, he scored a goal on August 23, 2006 in a 3-0 quarter-final victory over FC Dallas . At the end of the season, he and the team won the MLS Cup , the final of every major league soccer season.

In the game year 2007 Wondolowski was used by coach Dominic Kinnear more often in the professional team, but was still in the squad of the reserve team and came to his missions for them. In a total of eleven appearances in the MLS Reserve Division, the trained striker scored seven goals and, after 2006, once again ranked first in the reserve league's list of goalscorers (together with Anthony Hamilton ). In comparison, Wondolowski was in 16 championship games of the professional team in action, in which he only started in three games and in the rest only acted as a substitute player and mostly only came to a few minutes' short appearances. He scored one goal and one assist in his 16 league appearances. He was also used this year for Houston Dynamo in the North American SuperLiga 2007 and in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup 2007 and was also successful as a goalscorer in the latter competition. As in the previous season, Houston Dynamo secured the MLS Cup at the end of the Major League Soccer season in 2007.

Also in 2008 he did not make the hoped-for breakthrough within the team at the Texan capital club and only made eight championship appearances, in which he was not used once for the full length of the game and thus only had a match experience of almost 130 minutes. He achieved almost as much on July 1, 2008, when he led the Houston Dynamo professional team for over 120 minutes as captain of the 2008 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup against Charleston Battery and scored in the subsequent penalty shoot-out. Also in the North American SuperLiga 2008 , the CONCACAF Champions' Cup 2008 and the CONCACAF Champions League 2008/09 Wondolowski was used this year for Houston Dynamo. In addition to a first place in the regular season of the "Western Conference" with the professional team, the 1.85 m tall center forward achieved the championship title with the reserve team in the MLS Reserve Division, which was held for the last time this game year after only four years. In the reserve team, in which he also acted as captain, he was one of two players who played in all twelve league games over the full game, scoring six goals and preparing another three for his teammates.

On May 16, 2009 he succeeded in the game against the New York Red Bulls the 7000th goal in MLS history, where he was only the second Houston Dynamo player after Brian Ching (hit No. 6,000) to rely on this Kind could enter the history books of Major League Soccer. At the age of 26, Wondolowski was used on September 21, 2009 for the first time over the full playing time in Major League Soccer and prepared the goal for his team in the same game, a 1-1 away draw against the Columbus Crew . Until his last league appearance for the Texan football franchise on June 5, 2009, Wondolowski was in seven championship games of his team, scored two goals and put another two on for his teammates. Then he was given on June 9, 2009 in exchange for Cam Weaver and another pick in the MLS SuperDraft 2010 to his former club, the San José Earthquakes .

Triumphal March with the Earthquakes

Chris Wondolowski (right, 2010)

After returning to his old place of work, Wondolowski made his debut on June 13, 2009 in the 1: 2 away defeat by Seattle Sounders FC and was in action for the full length of the game. Over the entire 2009 season , the former young talent of Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop was used in 14 championship games in which the center forward scored three goals and gave one assist. Shortly before the end of the season, however, Wondolowski had to take a break from the remaining championship games due to a knee injury.

With the 2010 game year , a lot changed for the trained striker, who can be used on the wings as well as in the attacking midfield. After receiving a new contract at the beginning of the season, he quickly advanced to become one of the league's strongest offensive players. After scoring six goals in his first eight championship appearances this season and preparing another one for his teammates, his goal rate declined somewhat. It was only in the last few rounds of the season that he was once again clearly perceptible when he scored two hat tricks and scored once in a double. Shortly before the end of the season, he overtook Edson Buddle , the leader of the scorers' list for most of the 2010 season , and ended up with one more goal than the LA Galaxy striker . After 28 appearances, 18 goals and three assists, Chris Wondolowski won the MLS Golden Boot , the award given annually to the top scorer in Major League Soccer. By the end of the season he scored the goal of the week once and was, especially at the end of the game year, three times player of the week, which in October 2010 also earned him the title of Player of the Month. With the team he made it to the Conference Finals of the play-offs and was eliminated there against the Colorado Rapids with 0-1. Up to this point, all three games were used and scored one goal. Wondolowski was voted MVP of the San José Earthquakes for the first time in advance . He was also elected to the MLS Best XI at the end of the season .

After he made his national team debut due to his solid performances in the MLS game year 2010, he was to start with the team in the North American SuperLiga the following year , but the tournament was canceled in advance in March 2011 and the tournament was completely stopped in this form . In 2011 he was again one of the strongest attacking players in the entire Major League Soccer, but was unable to advance to the top of the table with the team and only ended the year in seventh place in the Western Conference . Up to this point, Wondolowski had scored 16 goals in 30 championship games and also had three assists. The choice of top scorer of the league was then only decided in a tie-break , as Dwayne De Rosario , who played in three different MLS franchises that year, had scored 16 goals. However, since he had contributed twelve assists, the choice fell on the winner of the MLS Golden Boot on the five-year-old Canadian. Wondolowski's individual successes this year included scoring a goal of the week and being voted Player of the Month for October again. Before that, he played in the MLS All-Star Game 2011 and was voted again in the MLS Best XI at the end of the season.

Further successes with the Earthquakes

With a new contract, which he signed in February 2012, he started the 2012 game year . This should become one of the most successful in his entire career, scoring 27 goals in his 32 league appearances, making Roy Lassiter's 1996 record for the most goals in a season. He also became the first player in the history of the MLS that year to be voted Player of the Month (April, June, September and October) four times in one season. His major contribution to 34 goals (27 self-scored and seven assists) also represent a league record. Other personal honors this year included four player of the week elections, one goal of the week, and another choice for the MLS Best XI and the election for Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player of the Year 2012. In July 2012 he was in action in the MLS All-Star Game for the second time in his career and showed 3-2 -Win over Chelsea FC when he scored the 1-0 opening goal, a highly acclaimed performance. He also became the Quakes record shooter that year after beating Ronald Cerritos' previous record (61 goals). With the San José Earthquakes he reached first place in the final ranking of the MLS 2012 in the Western Conference and thus qualified automatically for the subsequent conference semifinals , in which the team was eliminated against LA Galaxy with a total score of 2: 3. Due to first place in the Western Conference and first place in the combined table of both conferences , the team took part in the CONCACAF Champions League 2013/14 the following year . There the Quakes made it after two initial defeats and two subsequent wins due to the better goal difference from the group stage in the subsequent quarter-finals, in which they were then defeated in March 2014 Deportivo Toluca on penalties.

Before that, however, Wondolowski completed the Major League Soccer 2013 with his team , in which his scoring risk decreased somewhat, which was partly due to the fact that he played most of the season with a broken foot. Nevertheless, he was used in 29 league games, of which he started again from the beginning in each one. In the end it was enough for eleven goals and three assists, making him the most dangerous player in his franchise, and in summer 2014 for the third consecutive appearance in the MLS All-Star Game. After Frank Yallop resigned from his position as head coach in June 2013, Wondolowski continued to work as a regular under his compatriot and previous assistant coach, 42-year-old Mark Watson . In the final ranking of the league, the Earthquakes only reached sixth place in the Western Conference and did not even qualify for the play-offs that ended the season. That year he was elected to the NCAA Division II 40th Anniversary Tribute Team for the 40th anniversary of the NCAA Division II for his services at Chico State .

At the beginning of the 2014 game year , he took over from Ramiro Corrales , who announced the end of his career at the end of 2013, now 36 years old and as the last active player in the MLS debut year 1996, as team captain . This year, the striker with Polish and Indian roots increased the risk of goalscoring again, scoring 14 goals in 26 championship games and making another four assists. On August 24, 2014, after Carlos Ruiz and Juan Pablo Angel, he was the third player in Major League Soccer history to score a double-digit number of goals for five seasons in a row. In this game year, which finished the franchise in ninth and thus last place in the Western Conference and thus reached the worst season result since the franchise was founded, Wondolowski was the most successful goalscorer of the San José Earthquakes for the fifth time in a row. This year it happened for the first time since 2009 that he was not voted player of the week or scored the goal of the week.

100 goals in Major League Soccer

Even after the return of the native Scots Dominic Kinnear , who last coached league competitor Houston Dynamo for nine seasons and was already a player and coach of the franchise, Wondolowski remained in his traditional position. The team achieved a slight improvement compared to previous years, but did not get into the final play-offs again with a sixth place in the Western Conference . The 1.85 m tall striker, on the other hand, played a very successful season for him individually, in which he was again the most dangerous player in the San José Earthquakes with 16 goals from 31 championship games. He also made two assists and with his 16 goals was the first player in the history of the MLS to score a double-digit number of hits in six consecutive seasons. Furthermore, he was only the ninth player in the history of Major League Soccer to score 100 goals in the league in a 1-1 draw against Orlando City on May 24, 2015 . That year he also completed his 200th league game for the California franchise.

During the current 2016 season, the Wondolowski franchise extended the contract that was expiring this year for two more years; In addition, the Designated Player Rule applied to him was repealed for this contract extension . The 2016 season, which ended in ninth and penultimate place in the Western Conference , was again very successful for Chris Wondolowski personally. He scored twelve goals in 30 league appearances, with which he not only became the first player in the history of Major League Soccer to score ten or more goals in seven consecutive seasons, but also the second game in the history of the league to win managed to score goals against 21 different franchises. With his twelve goals, he was also the team's top scorer for the seventh time in a row and was also named MVP of the San José Earthquakes for the sixth time at the end of the season. With his road goal achieved by the end of the season 58 , he ranked second in the MLS statistics of records in this category; In addition, by the end of the season he achieved his 38th game-winning goal , the game-winning goal , which puts him in third place in the league's all-time statistics. With his 113th goal for the Earthquakes, which he scored on July 22nd, 2016 in the game against Real Salt Lake , he surpassed Landon Donovan's 112 goals for LA Galaxy and took second place behind Jaime Moreno in the statistics for most goals for a only MLS team. In the list of record goal scorers in Major League Soccer, he is currently (as of November 2016) with 117 goals in fourth place behind Landon Donovan (1st), Jeff Cunningham (2nd) and Jaime Moreno (3rd). For the second time after 2012 he was elected to the MLS All-Star Team in 2016 and played in the MLS All-Star Game for the fourth time this year after 2011, 2012 and 2013 .

Career in the national team

After solid performances in the MLS 2010 season and receiving the MLS Golden Boot, Wondolowski was invited to the US national team's winter training camp for the first time during the 2010/11 winter break by coach Bob Bradley . He finally made his team debut on January 22, 2011 in the 1-1 draw of the US against Chile , when he was used from the start and from the 60th minute on by Teal Bunbury , who was only his second International appearance came and in the further course of the game the only goal scored for the USA, was replaced. In total, on that day, apart from Chris Wondolowski , six other Americans made their team debut with Sean Franklin , Zach Loyd , Jeff Larentowicz , Sean Johnson , Anthony Wallace and Eric Alexander .

On May 23, 2011 Wondolowski was appointed to the squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 , which was also his first major tournament as a national player. After playing in a preparatory game against Spain at the beginning of June , he played in the first group game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Canada from the 64th minute. In the further course of the tournament he was used in the two subsequent group games, but was then no longer considered by coach Bob Bradley. The United States made it to the finals after victories in the quarter and semi-finals and were defeated in this by the Mexicans 2-4 . After that, although his positive development in the league, it took until January 2012 before he was called up again for the national team. After two friendly internationals in January, he also played another friendly in June before the national team went quiet again. After his outstanding performance in Major League Soccer 2012, he made the leap back into the national squad under Jürgen Klinsmann , who is now acting as US team boss, and already took part with the team in preparation for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup .

After a use in the preparation, when he scored his first goal for his home country in the 6-0 victory over Guatemala , he was an integral part of the regular formation under Klinsmann. In the first group game, a 6-1 win over Belize , Wondolowski ran up with his misspelled family name as Wondowlowski and scored a hat trick in this game when he scored the first three goals for his team. Since he believed he would have more luck with this misspelled surname on his back, he kept this incorrect spelling even after the Gold Cup and still appears in international matches with this name under his shirt. Since then, however, his real family name can be read on the jerseys. In the second group game, he scored two more goals in a 4-1 win over Cuba . In the following four games of his team in the course of the tournament, however, goals remained on his part. Nevertheless, he was in each of the games and won the tournament with the Americans after a 1-0 final victory over Panama . With his five goals he was next to compatriot Landon Donovan and the Panamanian Gabriel Torres with five goals each one of the three top scorers of the Gold Cup 2013.

Chris Wondolowski as national player in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup

After two appearances in friendly matches against Scotland and Austria in November 2013, he also played a friendly international match against South Korea on February 1, 2014, scoring both goals in the USA's 2-0 win. On his next outing, a game against Mexico, he signed a goal as a goalscorer. After further preparatory games for the 2014 World Cup in late May and early June 2014, he took part in the World Cup in Brazil between June and July as part of the 23-strong US squad . He was the first Native American to take part in a soccer world championship. On June 22, 2014, he came on the second day of Group G in the game against Portugal when he replaced Clint Dempsey from the 87th minute . After the USA rose to second in the group behind Germany , Klinsmann also used him in the 2-1 defeat after extra time in the round of 16 against Belgium ; here from the 72nd minute as a replacement for Graham Zusi . In the game, shortly before the end of regular time, he missed a goal that was believed to be decisive and therefore had to go into extra time with the team. In this he did the preparatory work for a possible and game-deciding hit by Clint Dempsey, which he also awarded. After the World Cup, he made two more appearances in friendly international matches in 2014.

Klinsmann also used him in two friendly matches against Chile and Panama in January and February 2015 before nominating him for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the US . While preparing for the tournament, Wondolowski signed on as a goal scorer in a 4-0 win over Guatemala on July 3, 2015 and again only acted as a substitute for the Americans at the subsequent tournament in the USA and Canada . After Wondolowski's two appearances in the group stage, which the USA concluded as the winner of Group A, he and the team were eliminated in the final round in the semi-finals against Jamaica with 1: 2. After that, he only made one appearance in the game for third place , which the team only lost on penalties against Panama. After that, things remained quiet around the 31-time national player for around ten months, who did not return to his next international match until the end of May 2016 after Klinsmann had nominated him to the 23-man squad for the Copa America Centenario . With the team he made it to the semi-finals, which were lost 4-0 to Argentina . He himself was only used in two games during the tournament; in a group game against Costa Rica and in the 4-0 defeat against Argentina. In his last international match (as of November 11, 2016), his 35th international match against Cuba, he was again successful as a goalscorer when he took the 1-0 lead to the later 2-0 victory of his team.
