Christian Gerlach (historian)

Christian Gerlach (* 1963 ) is a German historian and professor of modern history and contemporary history at the Historical Institute of the University of Bern .

Life

Christian Gerlach studied history, German language and literature, sociology and education at the Technical University of Berlin (TU). In 1998 he was at Wolfgang Scheffler at the TU Berlin with the work of the German Economic and Extermination in Belarus 1941-44 with honors doctorate . In this study, published under the title Calculated Murders , Gerlach examines the German hunger policy in the occupied east, which he sees as determined by a hunger plan . This was an instrument of mass extermination for the National Socialist economic leadership in the east, with the aim of achieving better food supplies for the Germans at the expense of millions of starving people in the occupied territories in the USSR. To resolve Hitler for the " final solution " Gerlach took position in 1997 and dated his "fundamental decision" on the basis of evidence in the records of Joseph Goebbels ' diary and Heinrich Himmler's service calendar on 12 December 1941st

From 1998 to 1999 Gerlach was a research assistant at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research . He then became a research assistant at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg and carried out research from 2001 to 2002 at the University of Maryland . From 2002 to 2004 he worked as an assistant professor at the National University of Singapore and from 2004 to 2007 at the University of Pittsburgh . There he became an associate professor in 2007. Since August 2008 Gerlach has been a full professor for contemporary history at the Historical Institute of the University of Bern. His main research interests include Nazi economic and violent politics in World War II, comparative mass violence, the history of hunger, food and agriculture, and the history of development policy, particularly in relation to Asia and Africa. He is the current Associate Editor of the Journal of Genocide Research .
