From 1992 to 2016 Heidel was a manager on the board of 1. FSV Mainz 05 . At the end of this period, he was the longest-serving manager of a Bundesliga soccer team. Heidel is one of the cornerstones of the club's sporting success. In 2001 he promoted Jürgen Klopp from player to coach, with whom the Mainz team rose to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2004. Klopp moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2008 . In 2009, Heidel took coach Jörn Andersen on leave five days before the start of the Bundesliga season and hired Thomas Tuchel , the former A-youth coach, as head coach. Under Tuchel, the zero five experienced their most successful time in the Bundesliga to date. In 2011 and 2014 1. FSV Mainz 05 reached the qualification for the Europa League with a 5th or 7th place in the Bundesliga, but both times did not qualify for the group stage. After Tuchel's departure, Heidel signed the Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand in the summer of 2014 , who was dismissed after a period of unsuccessfulness in February 2015 and replaced by the coach of the second team, Martin Schmidt .

The club's promotion of young talent was promoted under Heidel. The second team played in Heidel's early days as a manager in the B class, but rose to the third division in the 2013/14 season after the seventh promotion. The youth performance center of the 1. FSV Mainz 05 is certified by the German Football League with the maximum value of three stars. The U-19 juniors won the German A-Juniors championship in 2009 under the later head coach Thomas Tuchel after a 2-1 win in the final against Borussia Dortmund.

Heidel's tasks in 2002 included the expansion of the Bruchweg Stadium , the long-term home ground of Mainz 05, and the new construction of the Coface Arena , in which the zero-five have played their home games since 2011. Under his responsibility, 1. FSV Mainz 05 increased its annual turnover from three million (1992) to 78 million euros (2014).

Heidel was a volunteer manager until September 2005. After his car dealership went bankrupt in 2005, he worked for the 05er in his main job. His employment contract was extended to 2017 in 2012.

FC Schalke 04 (2016-2019)

At the end of the 2015/16 season he left 1. FSV Mainz 05 and moved to FC Schalke 04 as sports director for the 2016/17 season . Heidel signed Markus Weinzierl as head coach for the new season . After a mixed season, which Schalke finished in 10th place in the table, he replaced Weinzierl with Domenico Tedesco . Under Tedesco, FC Schalke became runner-up in the 2017/18 season and made it to the semi-finals of the DFB Cup . After sporting failures in the 2018/19 season , Heidel announced on February 23, 2019 that, with the approval of the Supervisory Board, his contract would be terminated by the end of the season at the latest. On March 14, 2019, Jochen Schneider was appointed as the new sports director, replacing Heidel prematurely.
