Christian Heinrich Zeller

Christian Heinrich Zeller (born March 29, 1779 at Hohenentringen Castle near Tübingen , † May 18, 1860 at Beuggen Castle near Rheinfelden ) was a German pedagogue , pioneer of the Inner Mission and hymn poet of a pietistic direction.

Life

Zeller, a son of Württembergischen lawyers Christian David Zeller (1749-1812), grew up in Ludwigsburg and studied from 1796 at the University of Tuebingen jurisprudence , but also kept in touch with one of Jonathan Friedrich Bahn Maier led pietistic students wreath. After graduating in the autumn of 1800, he entered a law firm, but could not make friends with the legal profession and worked as a tutor for Baron von Schnurbein in Augsburg from 1801, and in St. Gallen from 1803 , from where he visited Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi . In 1809 he got a job as a teacher and school inspector in Zofingen ( Aargau ). Here he met Christian Friedrich Spittler , the secretary of the Basler Missionsgesellschaft , with whom he founded a school for the poor in 1817 in order to carry out the work of the mission in his own homeland. In 1820 the school for the poor, designed by Zeller, was opened at Schloss Beuggen , a Baden domain not far from Basel , which was combined with a "rescue house" for neglected children. Zeller ran this institute until his death.

Zeller's marriage to the pastor's daughter Charlotte Dorothee “Sophie” Siegfried (1791–1858) had eleven children. The daughter Marie married the Swiss Samuel Gobat in 1834 , who became Protestant bishop of Jerusalem in 1846 . The daughter Bertha married the philologist, Catholic apostolic theologian and church servant Heinrich Wilhelm Josias Thiersch in 1840 . The daughter Therese married the pastor Karl Friedrich Werner in 1837 . The sons Nathanael (1823–1890) and Reinhard (1826–1891) continued their father's work as administrator and inspector of the Beuggener Anstalt. Samuel Zeller (1834–1912) became head of the institution in Männedorf.

Effect and meaning

The Beuggener Anstalt became a model for many other rescue houses. Zeller's brother, the Prussian high school and government councilor Carl August Zeller (1774–1846), Pestalozzi's employee, opened a child rescue center in the former Lichtenstern monastery in the Heilbronn district in 1836 (today the Lichtenstern Evangelical Foundation ). Pestalozzi assessed the Beuggener Anstalt very positively during his visit in 1826. After his own project had failed, he is said to have said about the Zeller institution: "That's what I wanted."

Franz Eugen Schlachter put Zeller in his story Master Pippin . Pictures from a Hidden Life (1898) a literary monument.

Zeller's hymn, Dearest Savior we are here , first published in 1837, is listed under number 165 in the hymn book of the Evangelical Reformed Churches in German-speaking Switzerland . It is recorded here under the title Faithful Savior, We Are in the Evangelical Church Hymns Württemberg (No. 561), in the Mennonite Hymnal (No. 12) and in the church songs (No. 92).

In Ammerbuch - Entringen a street is named after Heinrich Zeller.
