Christian Schneller

Christian Schneller (born November 5, 1831 in Holzgau near Reutte ; † August 8, 1908 in Cornacalda near Rovereto ) was an Austrian philologist , poet , epic poet and folklorist .

Career

After attending grammar school in Hall and Innsbruck , Schneller studied linguistics and natural history at the universities of Innsbruck and Vienna from 1851 . In 1855 he passed the teaching examination in German and later in natural history. From 1858 he was a high school professor in Rovereto and in 1863 married the Venetian Maria Canestrini. In 1873 his daughter Adelheid was born in Innsbruck. In 1868 Christian Schneller became a professor at the Innsbruck grammar school, the following year a state school inspector for elementary schools , and in 1874 a state school inspector for secondary schools . From 1897 he moved into a pension as a councilor .

Christian Schneller was particularly interested in the Ladin and other Romance dialects on the southern border of the former multi-ethnic state Austria-Hungary .

In 1902 his daughter Adelheid Schneller was the first woman to do a doctorate at Innsbruck University.
