Christian Ulrich Beccau (born October 3, 1809 in Friedrichstadt ; † October 3, 1867 in Husum ) was a German lawyer and notary .

Live and act

Christian Ulrich Beccau was a son of the barber and surgeon Benedict Vollrath Beccau and his wife Marie, née Sievers. One uncle was the poet Joachim Beccau . After attending the community school in his hometown, he attended the Husum school of scholars from Easter 1825 to 1831 . He then studied Protestant theology , but later switched to law . Since he was a member of the Kiel fraternity, Germania , which was banned in 1833 , he was not admitted to the exam in 1835, but only three years later.

After finishing his studies, Beccau worked as a lower court attorney in Husum. On January 2, 1846, he was appointed a notary. During the Schleswig-Holstein survey he spoke out radically in favor of Schleswig-Holstein. When Danish troops arrived in Husum, Beccau left. After the end of the war he had to audition again for his appointment, which he, like Theodor Storm and his colleague Rheder, was refused.

Beccau found a new job with the bailiff Ottens in the parish of Hemmingstedt . Here he wrote the "attempt to document the history of Husum up to 1603". It was an important work for the region, the appendix of which contains many documents. He also described in separate sections the history of the Husum Church, the Gasthaus zum Ritter St. Jürgen, the Minorite Monastery, the guilds and the castle in front of Husum . In 1835 he wrote a volume of poetry. There were also several articles that could be read in weekly papers from Altona , Husum and Itzehoe .

In 1855 Beccau got a new appointment as a lawyer with "a lot of toil and travel". From 1861 he was allowed to work as a notary again. He died impoverished in Husum in 1867.
