The Christiania Torv is a place in the Oslo district Kvadraturen , at the intersection of Rådhusgata and Øvre Slottsgate. There are some historically significant buildings on this square, such as Rådmannsgården , the Old Town Hall ( Gamle rådhus ) and the Anatomigården . In the middle of the square there is now a fountain that stylizes the glove of Christian IV , it was designed by the Norwegian artist Wenche Gulbransen in the mid-1990s .

history

The Christiania Torv replaced the previous market square in Oslo's old town Gamlebyen as the market square of the city of Oslo . Just like the former market square, important buildings were also built here, such as the main church at that time, Hellig Trefoldigheds Kirke , the Church of the Holy Trinity in 1639 , and the town hall in 1641 . However, the bishopric remained at its original location in the old town.

The square is laid out according to the typical pattern of urban planning in the Renaissance , i.e. as a street intersection with four right-angled recesses at each corner of the intersection. After the weekly market had been abandoned at this point, the development of the neighboring Akershus fortress expanded to the south-west side of the square. This led to the fact that the new development of the square on the south side has been shifted by approx. 15 meters towards the center of the square and the square thus lost its formerly symmetrical structure.

Hellig Trefoldigheds Kirke burned down in 1686 and was never rebuilt. Only the cemetery remained for a while. Later a riding school was built there, as well as stables for the adjacent Akershus fortress. In 1878, however, the neo-Gothic St. John's Church was built there , which had to be demolished again in 1927 due to static problems. Taking into account the increasing individual traffic, a parking lot was initially built there, later a gas station and only in 1996 a new residential and commercial building was built at this point, which has taken up the building limits from the time the square was created.

In contrast to the old market square, the Oslo Torg in the old town of Gamlebyen , Christiania Torv did not have a long life as an important market square and center of the city. The cathedral church was rebuilt after the fire in 1686 and in 1736 the city administration moved from the old town hall to the then new town hall at Rådhusgata 7, at the same time the weekly and annual market was moved to the new market square in front of the new cathedral church .

Award

Today's Christiania Torv received a prize for outstanding urban architecture from the city of Oslo in 2003 after measures to calm the traffic and beautify the city.
