Breakthrough in Germany (2005)

Christina Stürmer was already working with her managers Andreas Streit and Bernd Rengelshausen at this time to open up the German market. The single Vorbei was released in Germany in September 2004, but did not meet expectations. The revised single Ich lebe , published on April 25, 2005, rose to number four in the German charts .

The following album Schwarz Weiß (released in June 2005 in Germany and Switzerland ) reached number three in the German album charts and remained in the top 20 for more than a year. Most of the songs on the album, which were already known in Austria, were mostly newly produced and oriented the emerging trend towards German rock and pop music. The also revised single releases were Angels Fly Lonely , Mama Ana Ahabak and, most recently, Always believed in you . At the end of 2005 Christina Stürmer and her band toured Germany and Switzerland. The black and white tour lasted two months, with some of the almost 40 concerts even having to be moved to larger halls due to the high demand.

In the spring of 2006, "Christina Stürmer & Band" took part in the Jägermeister Rock: League and was able to prevail against the Dorfdisko and AK4711 (made famous by Stefan Raab's Bundesvision Song Contest ) in all five preliminary rounds. Christina Stürmer signed advertising contracts with the fast-food restaurant chain McDonald’s and the ice cream brand Eskimo and in the summer of 2006 she recorded the title Never Enough in two Austrian TV commercials. In Germany, the RTL song, which was initially only published in Austria, was selected as the theme song for the new soap Everything was counts .

In the run-up to the National Council election , in early 2006, again without permission, the ÖVP printed a photo of the singer in a brochure about Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel intended for young people . This time Christina Stürmer's management hired a lawyer.

For the release of the album on the German market, a new music video was shot in Spain for Never Enough . When the single Nie Enough came onto the market in Germany, the double A-side To be with you / On Sommertagen was published in Austria , with which Christina Stürmer achieved her fifth Austrian number one hit and thus became the most successful Austrian artist drew level with Rainhard Fendrich in the Ö3 Austria Top 40 . The album In this Stadt again reached number one in Austria, but fell short of expectations in Germany and Switzerland. In addition, the sales figures fell after a few weeks. At times Christina Stürmer played in halls that were only half full. Some media even spoke of a flop and crash. She then changed management again.

In January 2010, a well-oiled by Christina Stürmer reinterpretation of 1947 was Paula von Preradović texted Austrian national anthem Land of mountains, land on the river presented by Education Minister Claudia Schmied ( SPÖ ) for a campaign of the Ministry for the currently planned educational reform had been commissioned . Discussions were then less about the musical adaptation as a rock song and more about a text change in terms of gender-sensitive language . The passage "Home are you great sons" has been changed to "Home are you great sons and daughters" . The Sessler publishing house, which represents the heirs of Preradović on copyright issues , threatened to take legal action and demanded that the television and radio spots with the reinterpretation no longer be broadcast. In January 2011, however, the complaint was dismissed by the Austrian Supreme Court.

Stürmer has been in a relationship with her band guitarist Oliver Varga since 2006. Their daughter was born in August 2016.

Style and reception

music

Stylistically, Christina Stürmer presented with a rock-oriented mainstream - Pop . At the beginning of her musical career she covered a wide range of genres, from alternative rock to pop pop . Over time, however, their style increasingly oriented itself towards German rock , and Sportfreunde Stiller often mentions a musical influence . Since taking part in Starmania, she only sings German-language texts. With her fifth album Lebe Lauter , Christina Stürmer is named in a row with pop rock bands from Germany such as Juli , Echt and Silbermond . In Austria, although she sings in a High German tinged with West German, she is considered to be the most successful representative of Austropop for a long time - so no stylistic classification, rather the name refers primarily to her origin.

Texts

The lyrics of her songs take up topics such as love and partnership, alcohol and other drugs as well as the relationship to authorities, violence, war and peace, as well as philosophical issues such as transience, death and eternal life. Christina Stürmer pretends to be the "girl next door" who is not aloof, but demonstrates cheerful, exuberant naturalness. Again and again, comparisons are made with the pop singer Avril Lavigne . The songs are usually written by external composers and lyricists. Band member Oliver Varga was also involved in the compositions of the last productions.

influence

Christina Stürmer triggered a new wave of Austrian pop and rock music with her music in Austria, which is marketed by the Austrian broadcasting station Ö3 under the title New Pop and Rock from Austria ( see Die neue Österreicher ). A number of new bands became known through Starmania and the Ö3 Soundcheck . These are bands like SheSays , Zweifrau , Excuse Me Moses , Mondscheiner .

tape

The international band consists of Oliver Varga (Austria, guitar) and Klaus Pérez-Salado (Spain, drums). Hartmut "Hardy" Kamm (Germany, accordion, guitar and keyboards) left the band in June 2009 and was replaced by the Austrian Matthias Simoner . Gwenael Damman (France, electric bass) left the band in February 2012. Rue Kostron became the new bass player in June 2012 .

Due to the live appearance of Stürmer under the name "Christina Stürmer & Band", the band enters the public eye, which is why Christina Stürmer is also advertised as a rock band.

social commitment

Christina Stürmer is involved in various social projects. She supports McDonald's children's cancer aid and the www.deine-stimme-gegen-armut.de campaign , she is the ambassador of a children's hospice in Central Germany, for which she took part in a benefit concert , and she takes part in environmental protection campaigns , such as a shoot for the lifestyle magazine Max . She has also repeatedly committed herself to the ORF donation gala Licht ins Dunkel . In addition, Christina Stürmer and her band regularly take part in charity concerts without a fee, such as the concert evening Breathtaking 08 to promote research into pulmonary hypertension , where they performed on stage with Wolfgang Ambros and Ulli Bäer, among others .
