Christoph Julius Gravenhorst
Christoph Julius Gravenhorst (born February 4, 1731 in Braunschweig ; † January 17, 1794 there ) was a German chemist and entrepreneur.
life and work
Gravenhorst and his older brother Johann Heinrich Gravenhorst (1719–1781) founded the “ Chemische Fabrik Gebrüder Gravenhorst ” in Braunschweig in 1759 . In addition to the main product “ Braunschweiger Salmiak ” (from 1762), Glauber's salt (from 1769), “Red Braunschweiger Alaun ” (from 1767) and the green paints and paints invented by the brothers “ Braunschweiger Grün ” (from 1767) were produced.
The Gravenhorst salmiac factory built on the grounds of the Johannishof , a former Johanniter property in the center of Braunschweig , was the first in Germany. The sale of the color "Braunschweiger Grün" was very successful and the product was copied by other manufacturers shortly after its introduction. As early as 1768, the pharmacist Pabytzky from Peine was selling a comparable product under the name "Peinsches Grün".
After Gravenhorst's death, the company was continued by Johann Andreas Christoph Gravenhorst (1768–1833, physician) and Carl Hermann Julius Gravenhorst († August 12, 1828, manufacturer). In the 1820s the company ceased.
