Christoph Michael Haufe

Christoph Michael Haufe (born May 18, 1932 in Leipzig ; † February 19, 2011 there ) was a German pastor , professor of theology and canon of Meissen.

Life

Haufe was born in Leipzig in 1932 as the son of the teacher and later professor of practical theology Friedrich Hermann Haufe . His godfather was the composer and cantor Johannes Weyrauch . From 1942 to 1950 he attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig , where his father taught. After graduating from high school, he studied Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig and the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . It was in 1961 at Ernst Sommerlath in Leipzig with the dissertation The priesthood in Catholicism the presence of Dr. theol. PhD.

He then became a pastor ordained and worked from 1961 at the Church of Peace in Leipzig Gohlis . From 1963 to 1969 he was on leave and held the office of General Secretary of the Lutheran Unification Work (LEW) of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD). From 1969 he taught church history at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig (later: Kirchliche Hochschule Leipzig) and was rector there in 1973. A year later he was appointed canon of the Meissen bishopric . From 1990 to 1992 he was professor and from 1992 to 1997 full honorary professor for ecumenics, missiology and denominational studies at the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig. As one of 255 theological university professors, he expressed "serious concerns" in 1999 against the joint declaration on the doctrine of justification of the Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church.

In 1972, he founded the Brotherhood Liemehna eV for theology students. From 1998 to 2011 he was in charge of the Thomanerbund eV, alumni and support association of the Thomas School in Leipzig. He was also involved in the Paulinerverein Leipzig, which is campaigning for the reconstruction of the Paulinerkirche . Haufe was also the bearer of the Badge of Honor of the Order of St. John .

He spoke English, French, Russian and Swedish. Most recently he lived with his wife Christine Haufe (née Braunstein; sister of the chemistry professor Pierre Braunstein ), who had been honorary consul of the French Republic in Leipzig for many years, in Pönitz near Taucha . They had two children together. After Haufe's death, a funeral service was held in his honor in the Nikolaikirche ; he was buried in the Leipzig-Leutzsch cemetery.
