Christoph Rueger (born October 3, 1942 in Rabenau near Dresden ; † March 27, 2020 ) was a German book and radio author and musicologist .

Live and act

The pastor's son, born in Rabenau near Dresden, joined the Leipzig St. Thomas Choir as a singer at the age of ten . In the decade of his membership in the choir, he was shaped by the Thomaskantors Günther Ramin and Kurt Thomas . In 1962 he began studying musicology and sinology at the University of Leipzig . His scientific work initially focused on people from Russian music history, such as Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow and Alexander Nikolajewitsch Skrjabin . At the same time he studied piano and organ at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig and graduated as a concert pianist. From 1970 he worked as a lecturer in music history at the State Ballet School in Leipzig. At the same time, he took over the musical direction of studio theaters and the political cabaret " academixer ", which was founded in 1966 as a student cabaret at the University of Leipzig .

With his dissertation "Stylistic continuity and ethical constancy in the work of Alexander Scriabin with special consideration of his piano work" he received his doctorate in 1971 at the University of Leipzig under Walther Siegmund-Schultze .

In the following years, Rueger wrote books, including a portrait of Igor Stravinsky enriched with caricatures . In his biographies and monographs on composers, Rueger always works out the people in the artist.

In 1981 he was expatriated from the GDR to West Berlin. He got a job as a lecturer at the Berlin University of the Arts , at that time still under the name of the University of the Arts. He was later appointed professor of music theory and composition there. He held this professorship until his retirement in 2003.

In the music scene he was soon regarded as a “chief entertainer” and “a powerhouse in major and minor”. Until 1993 Rueger moderated live on the Berlin radio station SFB 3 "Classic for Breakfast" and on WDR 3 the "Classic Forum". He wrote chanson programs and gave concert readings for his books in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. For twelve years he was also a popular contributor to the cultural program on the luxury cruise ship MS EUROPA. There he accompanied the diseuse and cabaret artist Doris Bierett, speaking and singing at the piano .

Rueger defines “classic” as quality and not as a style epoch. For him, classical music is “weatherproof, time-stable sound material” that composers have drawn from their lives with all its facets.

He published the column “good listening” on new CDs in the Berliner Illustrirten . Many of his books have been reprinted over and over again and translated into several languages.

His book Musikalische Hausapotheke was published in nine languages. On January 13, 1992, Der Spiegel ran the headline: “Mozart instead of chamomile tea: Berlin professor recommends classical melodies against pain in the soul”. The popularity of his publications has a special reason: "The tone that Rueger takes is (luckily) far from being 'academically incomprehensible'."

In addition to his enthusiasm for classical music, the versatile man was not only a knowledgeable jazz fan, but also a devoted jazz musician at the piano.

Rueger lived in Kleinmachnow in Brandenburg .
