Clara Lichtenstein

Clara Lichtenstein (* around 1860 in Budapest ; † May 3, 1946 in Dorset ) was an English pianist and music teacher.

Lichtenstein studied music at the Charlotte Square Institute in Edinburgh, founded by her uncle George Lichtenstein . She had her first public appearances as a duet partner of the pianist Charles Hallé in 1880. In the following year she studied at the Vienna Music Academy; she probably also had lessons from Franz Liszt . After the death of her uncle, she took over the helm of the Charlotte Square Institute .

In 1899 she went to Montreal at the invitation of Lord Strathcona to set up the music department at the newly founded Royal Victoria College . In 1904 she became Vice Rector of the McGill University Conservatory , where she taught piano, singing, music history and theory until 1929. Her students included singers Pauline Donalda and Edmund Burke and pianists Ellen Ballon and Marguerita Spencer . In Strathcona Music Building of McGill University , a concert hall was named after her.
