William Clarke Hinkle (* 10. April 1909 in Toronto , Ohio ; † 9. November 1988 in Steubenville , Ohio) Nickname : Lackawanna Express , was an American Football player . Among other things, he played fullback in the National Football League (NFL).

career

College career

Hinkle played at Bucknell University from 1929 to 1931 . At his college he was used as a halfback and a defensive back . In 1931 his team succeeded in winning all games of the season. Hinkle drew attention to himself with his great speed.

Professional career

In 1932, Hinkle was hired by the Green Bay Packers and was mainly used as a fullback. In 1936 and 1939, the Packers won the NFL championship . In 1936 they beat the Washington Redskins 21: 6 in the final , and in 1939 the New York Giants 27: 0. Hinkle became famous for duels with Bronko Nagurski . The Packers and Nagurski's team, the Chicago Bears , met regularly, and Nagurski, who was also a tackle , did not always have the upper hand. In 1941 Hinkle ended his career. He himself was able to achieve 42 touchdowns , 33 of them by running play, during his career .

Honors

Hinkle is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame , the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team, and the College Football Hall of Fame . He is also in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame . He played in three Pro Bowls and was All Star four times. The Packers named a training field after him.

Others

After his career, Hinkle worked for the US Coast Guard . He died at the age of 79. Hinkle is buried in the Toronto Union Cemetery in his native Toronto.
