Clarksburg is a city in the US state of West Virginia and is the county seat of Harrison County . According to the 2000 census , the place has 16,743 inhabitants.

history

Named after George Rogers Clark since 1778 , the place was officially registered as a parish in 1785. In 1836 the Northwestern Turnpike reached Clarksburg, which was paved here in 1848 and now runs through the city as US Highway 50 . Before that, a daily carriage connection and a postal service to Parkersburg had already been set up in 1840 , which also provided a connection to steam navigation on the Ohio River . In 1856 the city was connected to the railway network.

US Highway 50 and Interstate 79 intersect approximately three miles east of downtown . North Central West Virginia Airport ( IATA airport code CKB), which is operated by the neighboring city of Bridgeport , is just under ten kilometers to the east .
