Claude Jorda

Claude Jean Charles Jorda (born  February 16, 1938 in Bône , Algeria ) is a French lawyer . From 1994 to 2003 he worked as a judge at the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia , including from 1999 to 2002 as President of the Court, and from 2003 to 2007 as a judge at the International Criminal Court .

Life

Claude Jorda was in 1938 in the Algerian town Bône born and acquired in 1961 at the University of Toulouse , the License in Law . He then completed a degree in Bordeaux from 1963 to 1966 at the École nationale de la magistrature (ENM), the French college for the training of judges . He also graduated from the University of Provence Aix-Marseille I in 1965 with a degree in criminology . From 1966 to 1970 he worked in the French Ministry of Justice before he was Secretary General of the ENM from 1970 to 1976. After initially returning to the Ministry of Justice, he became Vice President of the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris in 1978 . In this position he worked until 1982, after which he returned to the Ministry of Justice until 1985. From 1985 to 1992 he then acted as attorney general at the Cour d'appel in Bordeaux and from 1992 to 1994 in the same position in Paris. In addition, he taught from 1967 to 1970 at the University of Paris II , from 1971 to 1976 at the University of Bordeaux and from 1996/1997 at the University of Montesquieu Bordeaux IV .

From 1994 he worked as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia , where he was president of the first chamber of proceedings from 1995 to 1999 and, after his re-election as judge in 1997, president of the court from 1999 to 2002. In this capacity he presented a report on the work of the court in 2000 with proposals for its reform, as a result of which the number of judges was increased and the possibility of appointing ad litem judges was created. In February 2003, he was elected as a judge at the newly established International Criminal Court in The Hague for six years via the nomination list A for candidates with proven competence in the field of criminal law and criminal procedural law . There he belonged to the Pre-Trial Department and was presiding judge in the proceedings against Thomas Lubanga Dyilo . In August 2007 he retired from this position for health reasons, and was succeeded by Fumiko Saiga from Japan for the remainder of his term of office .

Awards

Claude Jorda has been an officer of the French Legion of Honor since 1993 and commander of the Ordre national du Mérite since 2000 .
