Claus Zoege from Manteuffel

Claus Zoege von Manteuffel (born May 6, 1926 in Dresden ; † June 3, 2009 in Stuttgart ) was a German art historian .

Claus Zoege von Manteuffel, son of the art historian Kurt Zoege von Manteuffel (1881–1941), director of the Dresden Kupferstichkabinett, studied art history in Göttingen , Basel, Munich and Freiburg im Breisgau . There he received his doctorate in 1952 with Kurt Bauch with a thesis on Gottfried Semper .

First he worked as a volunteer at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg . From 1955 to 1959 he was an assistant at the Municipal Art Museum in Düsseldorf and from 1957 to 1968 he was a curator at the sculpture department of the Berlin museums . In 1968 he completed his habilitation at the TU Berlin , where he became professor of art history that same year. In 1978 he became director of the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart and remained so until his retirement in 1991. In 1981 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Stuttgart . In 1971 he received the Lake Constance Literature Prize from the city of Überlingen , and in 1980 the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

One of his main areas of research was the southern German baroque sculpture, in particular the sculptor family Zürn .
