Clay or the Origin of Species is a 1965 American clay -animated short film directed by Eli Noyes .

action

Gray modeling clay forms into smaller waves and simple, symmetrical shapes, before finally the mass becomes a small worm that crawls across the white surface. Over time, the worm becomes a trunk-like something, soon a second one, and the two forms are united, separated and interwoven. Soon the trunk becomes a beak that takes on other shapes, eats it and mixes with others. Head-like shapes develop, which develop teeth over time and swallow larger shapes again. Plants soon emerge to be eaten, and over time dinosaurs and other animals such as turtles, butterflies and birds emerge. At the end there is the person who slowly develops over a couple of running legs.

production

Clay or the Origin of Species was created while Noyes was studying at Harvard University . The film was filmed at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. The swing music that accompanies the film comes from the Sammy Saltonstall Quartet.
