Clement Freud

Sir Clement Raphael Freud (born April 24, 1924 in Berlin , † April 15, 2009 in London ) was a British writer, journalist, television presenter, politician and chef of Austrian origin. He was a grandson of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud . In the German-speaking world he was best known for his children's book character Grimpel .

Life

Clement Freud was born in 1924 as Clemens Raphael Freud as the third of three sons in Berlin. His parents were the Austrian architect Ernst Ludwig Freud and Lucie Freud, née Brasch. One brother was the artist Lucian Freud . After the handover of power to the National Socialists , the family emigrated to England in 1933, where his first name was made Clemens Clement. In August 1939, the family took British citizenship. Freud was drafted as a soldier to the Royal Ulster Rifles during World War II . He was temporarily an adjutant to Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery . After the end of the war, Freud was assigned to the Nuremberg war crimes trials and was promoted to officer in 1947. Again a civilian, Freud married the actress June Flewett in 1950 , who has since called herself Jill Freud. The couple had five children.

Career

Early career

Freud was one of the first "celebrity chefs" in England, he first worked at The Dorchester and later founded his own restaurant in Sloane Square in London. He wrote columns for newspapers and magazines. He appeared in a series of dog food TV commercials that co-starred a bloodhound named Henry . In 1968 Freud wrote the children's book Grimble (German: Grimpel , translated in 1970 by Uwe Friesel and Carola Mendler), six years later the sequel Grimble at Christmas (German: Grimpel superhöchstbestens ) appeared. He also ran a nightclub, where he met a newspaper editor who offered him a position as a sports journalist. He later became an award-winning author, mainly writing about food and drink, but also about his second passion, horse racing .

Political commitment

From 1973 to 1987 Freud was a Member of the British Parliament . He was considered the first Jewish representative of the Liberals, although he converted to the Anglican faith with the wedding. When he left parliament, he was knighted in 1987.

TV and radio career

Freud was regularly heard on the BBC game show Just a Minute on Radio 4 from 1967 until his death in 2009 ; the audience appreciated his dry sense of humor. 1973 Freud was represented with a small monologue on the album Band on the Run by ex-Beatles Paul McCartney's band The Wings ; he was also featured on the album cover. Freud was later featured on television in the comedy game shows Shooting Stars and Have I Got News For You (2001 and 2003).

Academic Office

In 1974 Freud was elected Lord Rector by the students of the University of Dundee according to the Scottish Higher Education Constitution as their representative and in 1977 re-elected. He held the same honorary position from 2002 for three years at the University of St Andrews .

Allegations of abuse

In 2016, allegations were broadcast by two women in a TV documentary that Freud sexually abused them as children.

Death and funeral

Clement Freud died shortly before his 85th birthday in London. Guests at his funeral included U2 singer Bono , actor Stephen Fry and then Prime Minister Gordon Brown . In addition to his widow, he left five children and 17 grandchildren.
