Clewiston is a city in Hendry County in the US state of Florida with 7155 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Clewiston is located on the southwest shore of Lake Okeechobee and is approximately 50 km east of LaBelle and 150 km northwest of Miami .

history

A railway line was built in 1921 by the Moore Haven and Clewiston Railway from Moore Haven to Clewiston, which was sold to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1944 . The city itself was founded in 1925.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 7,155 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 2,684 households. The population density was 591.3 inh / km². 61.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 12.7% as African American , 0.8% as Indians and 2.3% as Asian Americans . 19.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.9% to several ethnic groups. 48.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 43.2% of all households and persons aged at least 65 years in 24.6% of all households. 75.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 3.03 people and the average family size was 3.36 people.

30.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 34 years. 51.4% of the population were male and 48.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 40,371, with 15.2% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 63.11% of the population and Spanish was spoken by 36.89%.

US Highway 27 ( SR 25 ) and Florida State Roads 80 and 832 run through Clewiston . The nearest airports are Belle Glade State Municipal Airport (national, 30 km east) and Palm Beach International Airport (100 km east).

The crime rate in 2010 was 325 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one rape, 11 robberies, 36 assaults, 61 break-ins, 164 thefts, 14 car thefts and one arson.
