Clinton is a place in Hinds County in the US state Mississippi , about ten kilometers northwest of the capital Jackson . Clinton is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area . At the 2010 census , the city had 25,216 inhabitants, and the number is rising; since 2000 the population has grown by around 8.8%.
The place was founded in 1823 under the name Mount Salus ( salus is Latin for "health"). It was named after the Walter Leakes plantation , the third governor of Mississippi, built in 1812 and located on the area. 1828, the city was in honor of DeWitt Clinton , the governor of the State of New York, Clinton renamed.
From 1995 to 2002, LDDS WorldCom (now MCI WorldCom ) was based in Clinton.
Republican Phil Fisher is currently the city's mayor.
Clinton is home to Mississippi College, founded in 1826, and Clinton High School .
The site also has an amateur soccer team, Mississippi Brilla , that plays in the Premier Development League .
