Clive Donner
Clive Donner (born January 21, 1926 in London , † September 7, 2010 in London ) was a British film director and film editor .
Life
Clive Donner was the son of a violinist and his mother ran a clothing store. The grandparents were Polish immigrants . He came to film through his father's music recordings for a Michael Powell film in the early 1940s. He was present during the recording and then started working as an editor. However, his career was interrupted by his military service in World War II.
In 1957 Donner made his first film as a director. In 1963 he filmed the play The Caretaker by Harold Pinter with Alan Bates and Donald Pleasence . He received a “ Silver Bear ” for this work at the 1963 Berlinale . His most famous film was made in 1965 with a large star cast: What's new, Pussy? . In the later years he mainly filmed literature for British television.
He was married to the British costume designer Jocelyn Rickards from 1970 until her death .
