Coaña is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias in northern Spain .
location
The municipality is bordered to the north by the Cantabrian Sea , to the south by Boal , to the west by El Franco , to the east by the Navia , Navia and Villayón rivers .
history
Remains of ramparts from prehistoric times in Coaña ( Castro de Coaña ) and Mohias attest to the long settlement of the entire region.
From the Middle Ages there are records from the Cartavio monastery , the castle, Castillo de Aguilar , and the church of Oviedo , which date the village / s to the year 970.
During the 12th and 13th centuries, Alfonso VII began dividing the region; so the community Coaña was divided between the dioceses of Oviedo and Lugo .
In the 16th century, under the rule of Felipe II, the entire administration was transferred from Coaña to Castropol .
During the Spanish Civil War , Coaña was home to the entire region's military hospital .

The subsoil, consisting mainly of limestone and sandstone , with the Pico Lebredo (834 m) as the highest elevation, is typical of the entire coastal region with its steep cliffs , bays , meadows and forests. In the hinterland are the mountains Pico Lebredo (834 m), Pico del Águila , Alto del Moqueiro (756 m) and Pico Vidrosa (641 m).
Waters
The municipality is crossed by the Navia and two of its tributaries, the Meiro and the Palmión .

Due to the proximity to the Gulf Stream , the climate here is almost Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters, and in spring and autumn there are sometimes relatively strong storms. Due to this climate, the eucalyptus tree is widespread in the region .
