Comedy Central (own spelling: COMEDY CENTRAL ) is a television station of the US media group Viacom , which mainly broadcasts comedy series and shows.

United States

Comedy Central is an American cable television channel . It emerged in late 1990 from the actually competing stations The Comedy Channel (from HBO ) and HA! ( Viacom ) after neither of the two channels was able to establish itself in the market.

Until the premiere of the South Park comic series in 1997, Comedy Central had rather low ratings . Word of mouth increased the number of cable networks that Comedy Central included in their programming, so that by 1998 over half of US households could receive the station.

In April 2003, MTV's parent company acquired Viacom the remaining shares of HBO's parent company Time Warner for 1.225 billion US dollars .

International

Germany

Since January 15, 2007 Comedy Central has also been represented in Germany with its own channel, Comedy Central Deutschland . The regular 24-hour broadcast was initially discontinued at the end of 2008. Instead, the channel has been shared with the children's channel Nickelodeon since December 15, 2008 . Comedy Central typically moved to Nickelodeon slot, broadcasting between 8:15 p.m. and 5:45 a.m. After Poland, Comedy Central Germany also showed Sex and the City as the second Comedy Central broadcaster from December 14, 2009 . Comedy Central has also been broadcasting in HD since May 16, 2011. Comedy Central started its program at 5:00 p.m. on September 8, 2014, and VIVA's program could be seen between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. In mid-September 2015, the division between VIVA and Comedy Central was reallocated, so VIVA broadcast from 2:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Comedy Central from 2:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The owner is Viacom International Media Networks here too. On June 20, 2018 it was announced that VIVA will be discontinued at the end of 2018 and that the additional time will be taken over by Comedy Central. Comedy Central has been broadcasting 24 hours a day again since January 1, 2019.

Austria

On January 1, 2011, a regional branch of Comedy Central started in Austria, whose program, apart from the advertisements, is identical to that in Germany. The offshoot replaced the regional version VIVA Austria on the frequency shared up to then with Nickelodeon Austria (6:00 a.m. - 8:15 p.m.). The broadcaster VIVA Austria for its part replaced the regional version MTV Austria, which had migrated to pay-TV, on January 1, 2011 . From September 8, 2014, Comedy Central started its program in Austria at 5:00 p.m., and the VIVA program could be seen between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. In mid-September 2015, the division between VIVA and Comedy Central was reallocated, so VIVA broadcast from 2:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Comedy Central from 2:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. On June 20, 2018 it was announced that VIVA will be discontinued at the end of 2018 and that the additional time will be taken over by Comedy Central. Comedy Central has been broadcasting 24 hours a day since January 1, 2019. As in Germany, Viacom International Media Networks is also the owner of Comedy Central Austria.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, the regional branch of Comedy Central Germany started on May 16, 2011. The program of Comedy Central Switzerland differed from Germany, apart from the regional advertising windows, in particular due to the shorter broadcasting time until 5:00 am, due to the start of the broadcast of Nickelodeon Switzerland (5:00 a.m. - 8:15 p.m.). The regional version VIVA Switzerland , which was replaced by Comedy Central, was in fact dropped, the regional content of which has been deliberately shifted to MTV Switzerland in the last 24 months . MTV Switzerland remains free to receive in the Swiss cable networks, but the previous digital program slot from Comedy Central Germany has been replaced by VIVA Germany. From September 8, 2014, Comedy Central started its program in Switzerland at 5:00 p.m., and the VIVA program could be seen between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
