The Comité de Estudios de Fenómenos Aéreos Anómalos ( CEFAA , in German Committee for Research into Anomalous Air Phenomena ) is the official body of the Chilean Directorate General for Civil Aviation for the investigation of unidentified objects in flight ( UFOs ) in the airspace of Chile .
background
The CEFAA was founded in 1997. The occasion was a series of UFO sightings by airport staff and pilots, which impaired the safety of flight operations in parts of Chile. The task of the CEFAA is the scientific investigation of the UFO phenomenon with the question of whether the UFO phenomenon endangers the safety of air traffic. As a civil organization, the CEFAA is not subject to any military body. However, the Air Force is represented by one person on the committee and cooperates with the CEFAA.
Reports on UFOs are collected, analyzed and cataloged. The aim is a better understanding of the phenomenon and its properties in order to be able to assess the potential risk to the flight operations. In doing so, the CEFAA relies primarily on reports from civil and military pilots as well as on radar recordings. Information is exchanged with authorities in other countries, and cooperation is also carried out with selected civilian UFO research organizations at home and abroad.

At the " International UFO Congress 2012 " (IUFOC) in Fountain Hills , Arizona , the chairman of the CEFAA, Ricardo Bermúdez, summarized the state of the research as follows:
- There is a real UFO phenomenon that occurs in and outside of controlled airspace.
- It is unknown what it is or where the phenomenon comes from.
- There is a need to investigate the phenomenon further.
- There is a need to share all the information available.
