Conjunto Académico João Paulo (dt .: Academic Music Group João Paulo) was a Portuguese Beat - band from the island of Madeira .

history

The group was founded in 1962 by João Paulo Agrela with some classmates at the Liceu de Jaime Moniz high school in Funchal to play at school parties. In 1964 they won a local band competition, which brought them performances in the capital Lisbon , especially at the Teatro Monumental . As a result, they were a guest on the television program TV Clube and recorded an EP for Valentim de Carvalho , the most important record company in Portugal. The EP contained three original versions ( La Mamma , Hello Dolly! And Ma vie ), and a Portuguese-language version ( Eu tão só , German: Me so alone) of the Charles Aznavour piece Et pourtant . They then accepted a two-week concert engagement at the Teatro Politeama in Lisbon, after which they returned to Madeira. Their arrangements combined modern styles of music with the listening habits of contemporary light music in Portugal. In particular, the harmonies in the lecture and the singing of the singer set the band apart from others. They then recorded another EP, on which their first and most important self-written hit was Hully Gully do Montanhês (German: Hully Gully des Bergbewohners).

A number of other records followed, which brought them numerous record awards in Portugal, some of which were also released abroad. In 1966, Conjunto Académico João Paulo no Teatro Monumental was released, the first LP by a Portuguese pop / rock band, and it was also the first LP in Portugal to sell over 10,000 times. However, it was not just recordings from the Teatro Monumental , but mainly pieces from their previous publications that received applause here.

From 1966 to 1969 they were drafted into the Portuguese colonial war for military service. They also played concerts for soldiers in Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique , while in Portugal records with their recordings continued to appear. In 1969, after their military service, the group restructured. Belgian jazz drummer Adrien Ransy and José Manuel Fonseca , who now played the saxophone here , came from the Quinteto Académico . They played numerous versions of California pop pieces and soul hits, some of which they performed with guest singer Vickie ( Victoria Busisiwe Mhlongo ) from South Africa .

The solo success of the band guitarist Sérgio Borges at the Festival da Canção 1970 , in which the band acted as a backing band, reinforced the increasing tendency to break up within the group. After the lack of success of the EP Lavrador in 1971, the group reorganized. From then on, she essentially only appeared in the Hotel Reid's Palace in Funchal and only released a few recordings. In 1979 the group disbanded.

After the band's drummer, José Gualberto, died in 2004, the band's founder and namesake, João Paulo Agrela, died on April 23, 2007. The group's singer and lyricist, Sérgio Borges, has also died on December 17th, 2011 in Funchal.
