The Copper Box ( German  "Kupferschachtel" ) is a multi-purpose hall in London , United Kingdom . It is located in the Homerton district ( London Borough of Hackney ) in the western part of the Olympic Park . During the 2012 Olympic Games , the hall was the venue for the preliminary round and quarter-finals in handball as well as fencing competitions in the modern pentathlon , while the goalball tournaments were held here during the 2012 Paralympics .

history

The hall, which can seat 7,000 spectators, was completed in May 2011. At the beginning it was called Handball Arena because initially only handball games were planned here. In January 2012, the name was changed to Copper Box, due to its appearance and the fact that it is also used for other sports.

In contrast to the larger basketball arena and the water polo arena, the Copper Box was retained after the games. As a multifunctional arena, it was released for public use and now serves as a training center, among other things.
