history

For the first time the place appears in 657 and 661 as a monastery, which was counted with some lands to the possession of the regent Bathilde , the widow of Clovis II. (Clovis). With a few monks, Bathilde ordered the region to be developed economically in addition to the experience of religious doctrine . During the Merovingian dynasty, Corbie developed into one of the most important ideological centers of the Franconian Empire . At the beginning of the 9th century, monks were sent from the Abbey of Corbie to Saxony (e.g. present-day Westphalia and Lower Saxony) as part of a mission project, where they founded Corbeia nova , today's Corvey .

After France entered the Thirty Years War , Bavarian and Spanish troops, who had advanced from what was then the Spanish Netherlands, conquered and occupied the heavily fortified city on August 7, 1636 in order to attack Paris from there. When the planned attack on Paris could not be carried out because of poor prospects of success, a French people's army set up in Paris besieged Corbie . After a six-week siege, the Spaniards had to surrender in early November 1636. This success made the city very well known.
