The history of the Abbey Theater , the Irish national theater in Dublin , Ireland , is retraced in a brief outline . The theater was founded in 1904 to help show the works of Irish authors and Irish subjects. It should also contribute to Ireland's cultural identity. The theater, which is supported by the Irish government, is the first state-subsidized theater in the English-speaking world. In 1951 it burned to the ground almost to the ground. In February 1961 the ruins of the Abbeys were demolished and reconstruction began under the direction of the Irish architect Michael Scott .
In the early years, the theater was closely associated with the writers of Irish literature and contributed to the growth of Irish tourism. Pieces by John Millington Synge , George William Russell and Seán O'Casey were performed, to name a few.
