Crenshaw High School is a public high school in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles with approximately 780 students. It belongs to the United School District of Los Angeles .

history

Crenshaw High School opened in 1968. Today Crenshaw High is a school with an average of about 780 students, the majority of whom are of African American origin. The colors of Crenshaw High are blue and gold, the mascot is the cougar (English: Puma ). The school's biggest rival is Susan Miller Dorsey High School , which is located nearby. In August 2005, Crenshaw High lost its high school accreditation because it could no longer meet various standards, but was finally rehabilitated in February 2006 after some improvements.

University sports

Crenshaw High School is known nationwide for promoting sport in the sports of baseball , basketball, and football . The school's sports team is called Crenshaw High Cougars . Basketball is by far the most important sport at Crenshaw High. The school became known nationwide for its talent development program, which was directed for over thirty years by Willie E. West , a famous American athlete. The team has won many titles from competitions within Los Angeles and the state of California. The Crenshaw Cougars football and baseball teams are also very successful in high school sports, which are much more important in North America than in Europe, and have won multiple local and national titles. The 1979 Crenshaw High Cougars baseball team is considered to be the most talented high school baseball team of all time, and it gave birth to famous baseball players such as Chris Brown and Darryl Strawberry , who later enjoyed professional sports. In 2004 the school received a floodlight system for its stadium from the Amateur Athletic Foundation (AAF) and the actor Kirk Douglas , so that it could play a home game against rival Dorsey High School in the dark.
