Cristi Puiu

Cristi Puiu (born April 3, 1967 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian film director and screenwriter.

Life

Cristi Puiu has been taking art lessons since he was 10 and exhibited his works in 1990 together with other young artists from Romania as part of an exhibition in Lausanne .

Puiu studied painting and directing at the Ecole Supérieure d'Art Visuel in Geneva and released his feature film debut with Ware und Geld ( Marfa și banii ) in 2001 , for which he directed and wrote the screenplay. For this road movie , which deals with the social situation in Eastern Europe, he was awarded at several international film festivals, including in Bratislava and Thessaloniki and at the Cottbus film festival with the Findlingspreis . The film was also nominated for the Critics Week Grand Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival . The Romanian film critics agree that the film Marfa și banii (2001) marked the birth of the new wave in Romanian film. Puius' next directorial work was the short film A Stange Kent and a Package of Coffee ( Un cartuș de Kent și un pachet de cafea , 2004) , which was awarded the Golden Bear and was awarded the European Film Academy (EFA) as best short film of 2004.

His final breakthrough came in 2005 with The Death of Mr Lazarescu ( Moartea domnului Lăzărescu ), which again won multiple awards and was highly praised by critics . Puiu received for this film at the Cannes International Film Festival the prize of the side series Un Certain Regard and was nominated for the European Film Prize in the category of director (Cristi Puiu) and screenplay (Răzvan Rădulescu and Cristi Puiu) .

In 2010, Puiu shot the feature film Aurora , in which he also played the lead role (Viorel). Aurora was awarded the Romanian GOPO Film Prize in 2012 in the categories of best film , best director and best screenplay .

In 2016 he received his first invitation to the competition at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival for Sieranevada .

Cristi Puiu was not only a director for the two feature films Ware and Money and The Death of Mr Lăzărescu , but also a screenwriter in addition to Răzvan Rădulescu. Together they wrote the screenplay for Niki and Flo ( Niki Ardelean, colonel în rezervă , 2003) a film by Lucian Pintilie and Offset (2005) by the German director Didi Danquart .

His feature film Malmkrog had its world premiere in the Encounters section of the 70th Berlinale on February 21, 2020.
