Curt Agthe (born July 28, 1862 in Berlin as Kurt Friedrich Coelestin Agthe ; † July 3, 1943 ibid) was a German genre and landscape painter .

Life

Curt Agthe was born in Berlin as the son of the piano maker Oscar Agthe (May 23, 1835 - July 18, 1909) . Little is known about his training at the Berlin Academy . One of the teachers was the history painter Anton von Werner , who had been the academy director since 1875 . Agthe himself names Max Michael , who has been teaching at the Academy since 1875, as a teacher. The painter Eduard Hildebrandt can also be proven as a teacher . One of Agthe's classmates is the painter Felix Borchardt . From 1891 to at least 1939 Agthe was a member of the Association of Berlin Artists . His pictures were exhibited regularly around the turn of the century. In 1937 his pergola was shown in Anacapri at the Great German Art Exhibition , but his paintings were rarely collected by the major museums. In 1939 the painter Heinrich Lorenzen (1900–1977), who was friends with Agthe, made a portrait showing Agthe, a white cockatoo on his shoulder, in his own studio (Berlin, private property). Curt Agthe died in 1943 and was buried in the 2nd cemetery of the Trinity Community at Bergmannstrasse 39-41 in Berlin-Kreuzberg, field M.

Agthe worked for many years as an illustrator for the art and culture series Velhagen & Klasings monthly magazines. For this art magazine, depictions of historical buildings and gardens were created (e.g. as an illustration for an article by Hans Mackowsky on Rheinsberg Castle and Park (1909)), sculptures, paintings, applied arts and fashion. Some of Agthe's works were also reproduced in the form of art postcards and distributed internationally. In the 1920s Agthe stayed several times in Rothenburg ob der Tauber (where he had been for the first time in 1887) and painted a wealth of motifs from this city. He also copied and restored old paintings or added unfinished works by other painters.

For his views from Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Curt Agthe did not choose the common motifs popular with painters and the public, but rather unusual perspectives, side streets and almost gloomy colors. The color of his pictures seems to depend on the subject. His genre paintings are based on the brown tones of Dutch painting, whereas the landscapes of Lake Garda have more brilliant colors.
