Cynthia Wade

Cynthia Leigh Wade (* 1967 in New York City ) is an American documentary filmmaker . In 2008 , Wade received the Academy Award for her short documentary film Freeheld .

Life

Cynthia Wade is the daughter of banker Cecil L. Wade and nurse Jennifer L. Wade. She first studied at Smith College , which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . A few years later, Wade completed the Documentary Film Production course at Stanford University , which she completed with a master's degree . In 1995 Wade directed, produced and edited her first short documentary film Almost Home . In 2003 she released Shelter Dogs, an award-winning film about animal welfare in America. Shelter Dogs has won awards at the Newport Film Festival and the Director's View Film Festival , among others . Her documentary Freeheld , published in 2007, about the cancerous, lesbian policewoman Laurel Hester , who is fighting for recognition of her partnership, has received numerous awards, in addition to the Oscar, Wade also won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival . In 2011, Wade directed Growing Hope against Hunger , a one-hour special edition of Sesame Street , starring Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Brad Paisley . The 2012 documentary Mondays at Racine about a hair salon on Long Island was nominated for "Best Documentary Short" at the 2013 Academy Awards.

In 1999, Wade married Matthew Syrett, who had worked as a producer at Freeheld , among other things .
